Bali Food Diary October – Celebrating the creativity and diversity of Bali chefs

Balifood Diary October
Like the rest of the world we have learned to live by the famous quote, “Man plans…God laughs”. Our community has grown a thicker skin and supported each other through the most difficult times, knowing that the time will come to celebrate together again.
The Bali Food scene has shown incredible resilience and as always offers more than just flavors; the creativity and diversity shown by Bali chefs have proved that where there’s a will there’s a way. There’s a lot to look forward to as the world starts to move again and Bali is once again a premier destination for food-loving travelers.
Make sure to get out there, support your local and enjoy the deals, long may they reign. Follow us on Instagram @balifood to get daily updates on all the promos in your neighborhood,
Sarah.

WHAT'S NEW IN YOUR HOOD

Kanvaz Patisserie by Vincent Nigita - An Elevated Patisserie experience in Seminyak.

This new sweet spot in Seminyak is much more than simply a venue, it’s a passion project by french pastry chef Vincent Nigita. Kanvaz Patisserie by Vincent Nigita is the fruit of Vincent’s passion and the challenges he had to overcome to make it happen. The avant-garde concept that he created is a beautiful balance of dessert bar & high tea venue located within Seminyak’s Kanvaz Resort. Vincent himself does not only simply work behind the scenes, he also works the floor and supervises every pastry made in the kitchen, You may wonder what happened to the little dessert bar in Canggu that introduced us to Vincent? He closed that and moved into the beautiful tea rooms at Kanvaz when he isn’t collaborating with some of the island’s top chefs. Everything they serve impresses with both presentation and deliciousness, from savoury to sweet. A highlight on our visit was the croissant, absolutely an item that nobody should miss when going there. Perfectly shaped and baked with a rich buttery burst that is difficult to perfect, yet they have. Choose from a simple pastry or hand-made chocolate or settle in and enjoy a set with freshly brewed tea or a glass of bubbles. This is delicious.

Ikra - A modern Slavic restaurant comes to Umalas

We didn’t realise that we’d been missing a Slavic restaurant, but with the large number of Russians who now call Bali home, it was inevitable that they’d begin to yearn for the familiar flavours of home. Stepping up, chef Fernando Trump finally introduced IKRA, Bali’s first modern Slavic restaurant. Located in Umalas, a popular neighborhood for international families and a strategic spot between Seminyak and Canggu, IKRA is accessible and delicious. Chef Trump (yes, we saw it too), makes most of the menu in-house, with a few luxurious imports, and practices a no waste philosophy that includes curing and preserving, to produce a menu that’s modern and refreshingly different. The food ranges from caviar, to Russian dumplings, pickles, and Russian-style sweet treats.

Breman Brewery Keramas - Beers even non-beer drinkers will love

Beer, and especially craft beer, divides people. Some love it, some don’t and others still don’t like beer at all. The new Breman brewery makes beers that even non-drinkers can enjoy. Brewed daily in Keramas beach, the beers are not yet widely distributed in Bali, available in a few selected venues like Deus Ex Machina, Jl. Legends, and The Plumbers Arms. Breman beers, made without preservatives have a short shelf life which is why it is only available on tap for now. On top of that, they are actually good for your digestive system since they contain microbes as natural preservatives. The pale lager has a subtle fresh baked aroma, while the dark lager has toffee overtones with a longer mouthfeel. Breman Bar and Restaurant at the brewery, serves authentic Balinese dishes with a modern twist, ranging from urutan, a Balinese sausage to lawar salad. Their homemade signature Bumbu Base is a vital part Balinese cuisine, and pairs beautifully with their beers. Breman is planning to launch to the Bali community with a series of events held over the next 7 weeks in different venues. Better yet, make the trip to Keramas and enjoy your beer at source and pair it with some stand out Balinese dishes.

PNNY Bites Petitenget - Bakers by day and DJ’s by night

it’s not only good music and fun vibes that the team from PNNY bring us, but scrumptious and fluffy goodness that has hit our sweet spot. The pandemic spurred the creative minds behind the party group PNNY to exercise their ingenuity to become the hot order for their squishy cinnamon buns and indulgent donuts. They’ve now taken a giant leap with their new bakery and coffee house that has just opened in Petitenget. This time, the sweet treats meet quick bites and burgers with fresh, and often hilarious takes on vibed up junk food and fresh pantry items. PNNY Bites has added a library to indulge the other side of our brains while indulging in sweet, home-style goodness.

BALI FOOD REVIEWS

Pescado Bali - Pererenan

You will find Pescado in the heart of Pererenan. This Spanish restaurant is the realization of many lifetimes of passion and culinary expertise. Their aim is to evoke a sense of being in the heart of Spain with a buzzing vibrant atmosphere and contemporary cuisine showcasing authentic Spanish flavours. Make sure you keep an eye out for their special nights, where they put together set menus, from paella nights to Argentinian steak nights. From the lively atmosphere to the excellent prices, this is authentic Spanish cuisine as we love it.

Synkonah - Berawa

In the heart of the popular Berawa neighbourhood, Synkonah is a chic and trendy Spanish-style restaurant and gin bar. Pop in for a drink and a sharing plate or wine and dine with their gorgeous menu. At Synkonah, head chef Lockie has created a Mediterranean style menu with his own twist. They have daily deals, that include steak night, fish and chip (50k) Wednesdays and a popular Sunday roast, which is an all time favourite of ours. Their cocktail list includes a little of everything, making it the perfect place to kick back and relax. We tried the lamb, and it did not disappoint, it was cooked to perfection. The meat melting in our mouths and paired perfectly, with roasted carrots, charred red peppers and creamy piped mash.

Ku De Ta - Seminyak

For almost two decades, the world has been enchanted by KU DE TA’s cuisine, charm, and celebrations. Nestled on Seminyak’s sandy shores, this idyllic beachfront space was created for sun-drenched days and unforgettable island nights. This is a Bali icon, where moments are shared over exceptional food, drinks, and soulful soundtracks from dawn ’til dusk. Every Wednesday they showcase a movie under the stars. This is no ordinary movie night. They theme the menu according to which movie is being played that week. We had the pleasure of “Pulp Fiction”, an American classic, paired with popcorn, burgers and of course the famous blueberry pancakes from the movie.
