Does your bad papa need a fabulous Father’s Day surprise?

If gourmet grub and craft beer is a bit 2015 for your doting Dad this Fathers Day’s then why not give him some personalised pampering, Bali-style, on September 4?

Ondy Sweeting checked out a few different ideas about how to indulge Dad without going the full ‘Manzilla’.

chill-reflexologyChill Reflexology in Seminyak has long been the island’s top destination for professional reflexology in a stylish environment that is not shimmering with crystal chandeliers and champagne-sipping ladies. The majority of Chill’s clients are men – as are its team of excellently trained reflexologists – and the minimalist architecture is as soul soothing as the gently dimmed lighting. This one long room has massage beds set into individual pods separated by translucent curtains. Clothes are kept on, music is selected on the in-house personal iPods with disposable ear bud covers and an eye mask is slipped on. This is a relaxation expedition has a lasting impact.

Chill has a tight and thoughtful menu of just five specialist treatments, which tick all the boxes for a thoroughly defragging experience. The Classic aims to release fatigue and pain from overworked legs and feet. Let’s face it, when you land in Bali and start to roam the streets, temples and cafes, legs get punished. A slice of this hour-long massage is dedicated to the arms, hands, shoulders and head. For the full Monty grab Dad the 1.5 hour ‘Ultimate Chill’, which combines acupressure and traditional reflexology to revive the central nervous system and energy pathways to relieve stress and tension. A great treatment for hideous jet lag is the “Holistic Chill’, which is a 1.5 hour deeply therapeutic full body treatment that targets headaches and bad circulation that can make the first two days of holiday a misery after flying high.

Not only is Chill a hugely popular destination for stressed out hospitality workers and harried ex-pat businessmen, it offers amazing value given that each of the five treatments are priced below Rp300,000.

fun-dayThe Canggu Club is a big family destination that has packaged up an entire program for Australian and NZ Fathers Day that’s likely to pique the interest of Dad’s worldwide with its Sunday roast.

On Sunday, September 4, Dad’s will receive a Rp300,000 Club Credit when they buy a Day Pass and from midday Bistro C will be serving it’s Rp200,000 roast.

There will be specials on Bintang buckets and a buy-one get-one free on selected bottles of wine. Best of all is that Body Temple spa is offering Dad’s a 60-minute sports massage for RP350,000 with a free upgrade to 90 minutes.

Add a sports manicure or pedicure and he will get a free 15-minute neck and shoulder massage.

male-massage-at-karmaFor a super chic day out on the beautiful Bukit peninsular overlooking the azure Indian Ocean head to Karma Kandara for a father and son chill out that you will not forget. Grab a 60-minute massage at the Sea Spa on Karma Beach, a pizza and ice cold beers.

If Dad is more of a fine wine man the Men’s Retreat may be more his style. This Karma indulgence kicks of with a 30-minute infrared detox sauna and Himalayan salt pool in the rarefied ‘whisper zone’ followed by a rhythm massage and a deep calm facial that is combined with a neck and shoulder massage. This extravagance is topped of with an express manicure or pedicure that will have Dad glowing with a Euro-groomed finish.

Go totally overboard and stay a few nights and the girls can enjoy one of the new and shockingly fabulous 75-minute lymphatic drainage massages that will be launched in September.

Shearlock Barber Shop in Petitenget is an epic venue for funky fathers. It is raw and rustic and offers classic barbering services as well as wet shaves and beard trims by professionals trained by premier Singapore outfit Hounds of the Baskervilles.

‘Barbering is not a hobby; it’s a lifestyle and commitment.

We are changing the lives of people, one hair cut at a time.’

While the boys at Shearlock are changing your life, enjoy some deicious man snacks such as Australian meat pies, a classic sausage roll, and meatballs in traditional tomato sauce or snazzy teriyaki sauce. The Shearlock bite is delicious – a delicious BLT on lightly toasted sourdough. You will find no delicate smoked salmon or feather light rice paper rolls here,

For drinks, take your pick of cold brew coffee, a range of hot and cold teas, cold pressed juice and smoothies. It is a hipster heaven or haven of a man cave flanked by raw concrete walls and floors with dark teak wood furniture and deep leather chairs. Can you smell the pipe smoke, yet? If you treat Dad to some freshening up just before closing time at 8pm take the stairs leading up to find, incredibly, a speakeasy that produces a mean cocktail.

The Bali Barber was the first on the island to put male grooming up front and centre with all of the accoutrements and Dad will love it. After all, haircuts are the new souvenirs and the Bali Barber has a wall of celebrity and common man images to pick a cut from – including a range of kid’s cuts. Just look up and pick a number. They have clipper buzz cuts, scissor cuts, skull shave, sports massage and mani-pedi’s plus some ‘tactical waxing’ from neck, back and shoulders through to the full MANzillian (back, crack and sack anyone?). The range of services is outstanding and includes spray tanning and the Flip Flop Fleet hot stone foot massage, tattooing, hair braiding for the surfster look and nape undercuts. This operation is popular for grooms and best men and it also does in-villa packages.

For the special day book Dad in for a MANdatory package, which will get him chilled over three hours of down home luxury. First up is the Bali Big Boss haircut and shave that starts with a skin softening aloe vera rub then a hot towel wrap followed by a slathering of rich shaving crème that is brushed on and shaved off with a razer sharp cutthroat.

“The guy really knows what he’s doing,” said my guinea pig partner. The ritual is finished with non-stinging aftershave lotion and a cold towel press.

“It’s cool and has an unusually blokey vibe. I enjoyed listening to Meatloaf, which is not often heard in Bali.”

The signature massage is super relaxing, and a good slice of time is spent on the head. Balinese music is a chilled feature to bring the ambience down a notch. The facial is a deep cleansing job that shafts blackheads and enlivens the skin.

“I looked younger which is amazing. Next time I will not wait 47 years to have one. Not really knowing what to expect, I was surprised and relieved that everything was straightforward. It didn’t feel like a massive indulgence rather like healthy maintenance,” said the man-spa virgin.  The cost AUD80 – or Rp800,000 for the lot.
