Why has Seminyak fallen in love with Corner House?

By Sarah Dougherty

If you’ve driven past the Corner House lately, you can’t help but notice the lines outside with guests waiting for a table to enjoy the generous food served up every day by this neighbourhood bistro. The Australian tradition of the gastro pub has found a home at Seminyak’s Corner House and the locals are loving it. It’s all about celebrating warm weather, conversation, great tunes and fabulous food. There is even a beer garden; you have to love that.

From burgers to char-grilled steaks, from plate-sized chicken parmagiana to fish and chips, modern Australian breakfast menus and lively lunches, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Corner House, and the portions are beyond generous. With kick ass cocktails, frosty craft beers, a short but well-priced list of wines and a good dose of warm hospitality, Corner House has become Seminyak’s most lively hang out. With nightly live music, The Voice style singing competitions, an upstairs bar called Famous, singles nights and much more, every day is an event at the breezy cafe on the corner of Oberoi Road.

Corner House has been serving up a special diet of great service, generous portions and cut prices during the lockdown, from their now famous 49K breakfasts to 2 for 1 pizza nights, affordable cocktails, family-style chicken parmie nights and more, all in the spirit of providing a safe yet lively venue for their growing list of regulars.  And be;lieve me, locals have been loving the generous discounts, as Corner House makes it almost impossible to resist.

What’s on the menu.

Sundays are devoted to seafood. With groaning fisherman’s baskets overflowing with fat, fresh crumbed prawns, battered fish, calamari, scallops and fresh vegetables, they are laid out on a bed of hand cut chips and served with home-made tartare sauce. In addition to that there are freshly shucked oysters ( huge and glistening) and generously-sized King prawns at just 15K each. Served with traditional seafood sauce, they are delicious and many a patron has been known to eat more than a dozen.

During the week, the day begins with breakfasts, a full menu of classics from avocado toat to smoothie bowls to eggs benedict feature. All washed down with great coffee from revolver Espresso and fruity smoothies and juices. Lunch is served bistro-style in the open dining room or in the garden while the nights are themed with budget busting discounts that ensures that dining out won’t break the bank.

It’s all part of the plan to ensure that not only does Corner House survive but also that locals and visitors have a place to go that is as delicious as it is fun. Modern Australian pubs are world-famous for serving up great food at pub prices and Corner House has found the tradition is a recipe for success at their Seminyak venue.

The cocktails of the day are a spicy Bloody Mary, designed as the perfect hangover cure, and zesty mojitos at just 60K.  Owners Mick and Lynley took over the venue last year and converted the French brasserie style menu to a more generous modern Australian style.

“We looked at the situation when Covid hit and we decided to step up and offer guests more bang for their buck. Seminyak is much quieter at the moment than Canggu and people are looking for a deal to get them out of the house. We’ve done that and added live music, affordable bar prices, nightly specials, and daily breakfasts at great prices along with a lively Sunday session designed to remind us all of the good times,” explains Mick Le Grand who has a long tradition of running pubs in Melbourne.

All the songs we love.

The atmosphere at Corner House is lively. The nightly band features some great singers and the tunes are designed to get people tapping their toes, singing along to their favourites and often taking to the stage.

“ We’ve had some great singers jump up and join the band. They are customers who just enjoy having a sing and some of them are just great. Now they show up regularly and the bands know who they are and call them up,” explains Lynley.

Famous – upstairs at Corner House.

After putting the finishing touches on the breezy upstairs bar, Famous has opened the doors adding another layer to the Corner House experience. Starting earlier than we’re used to for partying, famous plays to the crowds with a long central bar, DJs spinning tunes we love and regular party nights including Tinderella, the singles night out.

Open nightly from 6pm, the restaurant spills into the upstairs and as some prefer the atmosphere. often the party crowd seduces diners to stay for another drink, and then another, as the bar pumps out classic cocktails and the music heats up.

“We all needed a place to go as Seminyak has been very quiet and many of our guests have been staying home isolating. The locals are loving it, and we’ve found there is definitely a hunger for a place to go that’s not too crowded but still has a buzz about it. Our singles night has been a big hit and it’s all about meeting people and having fun,” explains Mick.

One of the joys that many of us are missing is the buzz of being out, sharing good food, enjoying a drink together and enjoying the company. Corner House delivers all that from breakfast through to dinner and beyond. The philosophy of serving up generous portions of comforting food, making the experience affordable and adding music is winning back regular customers and winning new ones.

“ It’s all about making people smile, we all need that right now and we’re never happier than when the venue is buzzing with conversation and our patrons are happy,” continues Mick.

Corner House have put in place all the safety protocols and have staggered sessions for all their meals, so reservations are recommended.
